Trees are the lungs of the biosphere... they take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. Their removal not only limits this natural function, but destroys habitat for thousands if not millions of species of all sizes and families.
Deforestation can be prevented -- it's not easy, but it is feasible. But it takes consumer choices that reduce or eliminate the purchase of coffee, wood products, paper products, etc. that come from deforestation processes.
One way to accomplish this is to support "FSC" certified processes and products. Forest Stewardship Council helps promote sustainable forestry processes around the world.
